Lets turn this into a dress! During the summer I was inspired to give up-cycling a go. Scrolling through Instagram, I came across British Heart Foundation's  'Big Stitch' competition. It's such a great way to get people into the charity shops and to reuse and re-purpose rather than go for the fast fashion option. I'm always turning bed linen and other textiles into dresses, so thought this would be right up my street. I found this gorgeous mustard yellow tablecloth in the British Heart Foundation store in Street, Somerset. The colour screamed at me from the rails, so I grabbed it.  Another positive about this process was the cost, buying fabrics from charity shops can be great for the purse strings too. I was pretty sure the fabric would be sturdy enough for my pinafore, it feels slightly like denim to touch. I couldn't see what the exact type of fabric it was as the label had been removed. It's that moment you receive a party invite and it's for fancy dress! Your brain scrambles to come up with a fun, original costume idea that no one else would have thought of. Tricky isn't it? Well to make matters that slight bit harder the costume had to be from TV or film. I had two options really, Mary Poppins or Elizabeth Bennet. "Elizabeth Bennet??" I hear you cry, yes I know she's technically a character from a book, but I really do love Keira Knightley's rendition of her in the 2005 adaptation. I considered my two options, as much as I love Mary Poppins and her cheery rosy cheeks, I knew I had to go with dear Lizzie. Reasons? Well, 1. Dressmaking and indeed most types of sewing I consider a type of therapy. The transformation of a piece of flat fabric into something wearable is something I will never tire of. If you had asked me several years ago that I would be able to create and incredibly, wear something I had made myself I would have laughed at you. Dressmaking and being able to make my own clothes was something on my long list of things that I would one day achieve. It was my mum who happened to find a retro 1970s sewing machine in a charity shop that got me started in this brilliant world of sewing. At the time I was in my first year of university, so I didn't get too caught up in it at the start. It wasn't until 2014 when I finally handed in my last ever assignment that I was able to really pursue this new hobby. I've been meaning to start a blog for quite some time, I'm not sure what made me finally decide to go for it, but here I am. I'm hoping to fill the space with things I've created including the inspiration and process behind them. I consider myself a creative individual and really love it when I stumble upon new things to try out. Sometimes it can go well but I've also had my fair share of epic fails too. I'm also hoping to write about how I keep myself happy, mental health is a really important subject to me. Being creative has been at the forefront of this and I'm lucky enough to be able to promote this in my work with children and young people. I love the outdoors, being surrounded by natural beauty and often use the excuse of walking Daisy, my French Bulldog, to get out in the fresh air.
