Cross Stitch Saves the Day!

Image
I have been a cross stitcher for many, many years. It began in childhood, when my Nan babysat one evening. She introduced me to the world of cross stitch when I was about ten years old. I have cross sticthed on and off since then, so almost 30 years!! Giving away my age there.. 2020 was an absolute stinker of a year. Awful for so many people across the world who lost loved ones before their time. We were all suddenly told to stay at home, not meet with friends and family, work from home. Our lives changed so dramatically. It was like being in a weird dream you couldn't wake up from.  It was during the spring of 2020 that I began cross stiching again after a very long hiatus. It was pure therapy and I'm so glad I rediscovered it. I ended up going down a long rabit hole and discovering an entire section of YouTube devoted to it. Flosstube! I'm not sure how many hours I've sunk into watching people talk passionately about their cross stitch hobbies. I've also been in...

From Tablecloth to Pinafore!

Image
Lets turn this into a dress! During the summer I was inspired to give up-cycling a go. Scrolling through Instagram, I came across British Heart Foundation's  'Big Stitch' competition. It's such a great way to get people into the charity shops and to reuse and re-purpose rather than go for the fast fashion option. I'm always turning bed linen and other textiles into dresses, so thought this would be right up my street. I found this gorgeous mustard yellow tablecloth in the British Heart Foundation store in Street, Somerset. The colour screamed at me from the rails, so I grabbed it.  Another positive about this process was the cost, buying fabrics from charity shops can be great for the purse strings too. I was pretty sure the fabric would be sturdy enough for my pinafore, it feels slightly like denim to touch. I couldn't see what the exact type of fabric it was as the label had been removed. I plonked it into the wash and it came out super. The only annoy...

Lazy blogger returns!

Image
I'm still here! I apologise for not having any recent updates. Life really genuinely gets in the way and before I know it I've had very little time to write anything for my blog! I thought I'd regale you all with what creations I've managed to conjure up in the last time I wrote. Plus charity shop finds and new hobbies to boot. My rather messy and crowded craft/sewing room - I'm now having to make space for another new hobby! I'll rewind to the summer, as it's been that long. I can't quite believe we're in Autumn already. A good friend of mine has introduced me to a brand new hobby called Postcrossing. Its really rather brilliant. Especially if you're a fan of the old snail mail. Personally, receiving something other than a bill or boring piece of marketing material puts a great big smile on my face. Who doesn't like getting 'happy post'? It all starts with signing up to a free website called  Postcrossing . You write yoursel...

You Shall go to the Ball

Image
It's that moment you receive a party invite and it's for fancy dress! Your brain scrambles to come up with a fun, original costume idea that no one else would have thought of. Tricky isn't it? Well to make matters that slight bit harder the costume had to be from TV or film. I had two options really, Mary Poppins or Elizabeth Bennet. "Elizabeth Bennet??" I hear you cry, yes I know she's technically a character from a book, but I really do love Keira Knightley's rendition of her in the 2005 adaptation. I considered my two options, as much as I love Mary Poppins and her cheery rosy cheeks, I knew I had to go with dear Lizzie. Reasons? Well, 1. I thought there might be other 'Poppins' at the party seeing as the new film had only recently been in cinemas and 2. I have always wanted a regency dress. You never know when you may need one for a turn around a fancy country estate. I can dream! Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet So, where do I...

Dressmaking Therapy

Image
Dressmaking and indeed most types of sewing I consider a type of therapy. The transformation of a piece of flat fabric into something wearable is something I will never tire of. If you had asked me several years ago that I would be able to create and incredibly, wear something I had made myself I would have laughed at you. Dressmaking and being able to make my own clothes was something on my long list of things that I would one day achieve. It was my mum who happened to find a retro 1970s sewing machine in a charity shop that got me started in this brilliant world of sewing. At the time I was in my first year of university, so I didn't get too caught up in it at the start. It wasn't until 2014 when I finally handed in my last ever assignment that I was able to really pursue this new hobby. By this time I had managed to upgrade the sewing machine to something a bit more modern. My very first dress was made with a curtain for £2 sourced from a charity shop. I bought a copy of L...

Life's a Climb but the View is Worth it!

Image
I truly am a lazy blogger. I had every intention of keeping this blog up to date but to no avail. So this evening instead of wasting hours trawling through Facebook posts I decided to actually put something on here. I wanted to share a recent walk (or hike it felt like) up Brent Knoll in Somerset. If you're ever travelling in the region its worth a visit. Especially if you appreciate the great outdoors and some stunning views. I am certainly not an 'active' or 'fit' person, but the climb up this hill really was worth the effort. I did have to resort to being pushed at one point from my ever helpful husband and kids. It did make me realise that I need to get out and do more of this sort of thing. I love being outdoors, very much so when the sun is shining too. This particular day was gorgeous, clear blue skies and a gentle breeze which was a welcome relief from the heat. This is the sign that greets you on the last hurdle of the climb, probably the steepest ...

Feeling 'Lighter'

Image
I'm back from a long slumber away from blogging. I had every intention to be dedicated with my blog and post regularly, but life does generally get in the way. Autumn was the start of my emotional decline. My mood was incredibly low and I couldn't understand why. It turns out, after many tears, self berating and general feeling rubbish, I have Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). The Dr recommended using light therapy as during our discussions (and looking back through past diaries) the low mood was found to be a recurring pattern during late Autumn and Winter months. I have to admit I was really sceptical, I just couldn't see how a light would make any difference at all. I decided to take vitamin D alongside the light therapy too. My husband did lots of thorough research online and we ended up buying a Redstone SAD Light Box. Apparently you need to buy a light of 10,000 Lux for it to be effective. So now I switch on my light for twenty minutes each morning whilst putting o...
