Hi everyone,
I really hope you've had a good week? Mine has been a bit of a mixed bag. The week started off very optimistically, after all it's never the best feeling going back into work after having a nice relaxing week at home is it? I had rejoiced the evening before by baking a rather successful, in my humble opinion, ginger cake. Okay, not quite as delicious as the one I remember my Nan making as a kid, but nevertheless it was a worthy contender for one of my best bakes. My husband, who is always a honest critic of my baking, gave it both thumbs up. It went down a storm with the children too although it has been noted that a dollop of custard wouldn't go amiss next time.

Before the gannets attacked! An easy bake I found on the BBC Good Food website. |
Monday came and went and the creeping malaise I always get on a Sunday night was soon forgotten. It's like a week off never happened! The following day I even got to do a spot of charity shop shopping. One of my favourite things to do. The unbridled joy I get from rifling through rails of clothing and casting a beady eye across the bric-a-brac is second to none. I managed to get a few treasures. A few items that I might put away as stocking fillers! I'd be interested to know what others think about this? I personally wouldn't mind receiving a pre-loved item, especially if it was something I would really enjoy. A lot of the gifts I have found are still brand new (perhaps unwanted presents from last year's festive season?). I am telling myself that I'm being sustainable and doing my bit for charity too. What do you think?

Another bargain £1 find, happy days. I'm actually looking forward to playing this one. |
I have also discovered that I have an intolerance to garlic bread. This is a disaster as I love the stuff, but on too many occasions now (for it not to be a coincidence) I have suffered terribly after eating it. My garlic nemesis decided that 3.30am on a Friday morning would be the best time to alert me to this! Not a brilliant occasion I can assure you. So what was to be my day off (I had plans to visit the charity shops in Wells) turned into a blanket, sofa, hot water bottle day. Daisy does keep great company though. Luckily by late Friday afternoon I was almost feeling human again, though did not partake in the usual Friday night pizza tradition. I wasn't that brave.

I have also been thinking about the centenary of WW1 this week and all the terrible wars that have followed. How life must have been for people during those bleak times and how important it is that we don't let our future generations forget the bravery and sacrifices made. Life could have been so very different indeed. I wore my poppy with pride today - I reflected on how grateful I am, I really think this is something we all need to remind ourselves to do now and then. Try to be grateful even for the little things.

Lest we forget |
Have a good week everyone - be happy!
